1:48 Scale Armstrong Barrel and Box Company
designed by James & Anna Cleveland
Frenchman River Model Works
At the close of the Civil War, the Armstrong family moved to the picturesque Stinkwater Crik area. Having seen the tremendous need for barrels and boxes (crates) of every size they set up a booming factory. The family owned business flourished and grew until the stock market crash in the 20’s put the kibosh on the industry. Unfortunately, they had over extended their credit and the once prosperous factory fell into disrepair. Armstrong Barrel and Box Company still supplies product to the local businesses, but is a shadow of its former glory.
This kit consists of several main components. While this kit may seem a bit complex, it is actually designed to be a quick and easy build that requires minimal modeling skill, or can be made as complex as desired for the most advanced modeler. All resin castings have character and detail cast in place.
Here are some of the details:
- The Main Building: The main building is constructed of horizonal clapboard siding (cast in resin) with Tichy doors and windows. The loading dock doors are a Frenchman River part. This building is a complete building all by itself and can stand alone, or can be used with the stone foundation included. The wooden loading dock is assembled from lumber supplied in the kit. Feel free to adjust the dimensions or leave it off entirely according to your project needs.
- The Stone Foundation: The foundation represents stone. There are 4 pieces that work with the Main Building allowing this to be a stand alone structure with a foundation. Three additional pieces work perfectly with the Board and Batten Addition.
- The Board and Batten Addition: The addition to the side is vertical board and batten siding (cast in resin) and has tons of character cast in place. This can be used as shown or used as an addition to many other buildings as you see fit. We have included a lead-free pewter smoke jack in this kit to be installed on this addition, however, it can easily be installed wherever you would like.
- The Stone Power House: The addition on the back is packed with detail including realistic stone work and bricked up windows and door. We made sure to continue the stone detail around the corner making for a minimal seam. This addition is not intended to have a stone foundation as it sits on the ground. A smoke stack with riveted bands and loops for guy wires add realism and interest. This addition can be placed as you desire, or even used as an addition to many other buildings.
- The Industrial Rooftop Dust Collector: This is an important detail to many industrial buildings. Ours is easy to assemble and is packed with detail. It is included in this kit and is also available as a separate kit for your other projects.
- The Wooden Rooftop Water Tank: A rooftop water tank adds additional detail on the large, sloping roof. This kit is very easy to assemble and gives maximum attention to detail in a minimal amount of time.
This kit builds up into an entire scene with tons of detail and character added that will make this a center piece to your layout or diorama.
